On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city registered an AQI above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15-20x above acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly pollution that blankets the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

However recently, the recently formed city government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".

Court Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court agreed to the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst readings observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have continued as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst readings ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Sources

The problem in the capital is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k early deaths each year in the capital.
