Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
